Cisco Systems Standardizes on TOAD and Doubles Developer Productivity
Cisco Systems, the leader in networking for the Internet, chose Quest Software's TOAD as their standard for Oracle PL/SQL development. TOAD's easy-to-use graphical interface and Xpert tuning capabilities saved Cisco's developers significant amounts of time by automating development and tuning processes-- doubling their productivity without adding staff.
Overview
"Using Quest's automated approach compared to Oracle's mostly manual approach, we are able to get development work done at least twice as fast." - Brian Christensen, Director IT Business Systems, Cisco Systems
The Challenge
As a global company, Cisco is challenged with maintaining more than 2,000 servers and at least 1,000 databases, most of them Oracle. These large environments yield enormous amounts of new data and require constant application upgrades. Working with a traditional command-line interface, Cisco's Oracle developers were challenged with building code quickly and accurately. This manual development approach impacted the productivity and efficiency of Cisco's developers and DBAs. Brian Christensen, director of IT business systems at Cisco explained, "We're continually focused on cutting costs and improving productivity. In order to do this, we really needed a development tool to automate coding and tuning." Christensen and his team also faced geographic challenges. With developers all over the world that need constant access to new data, using the same tool would help improve communication and prove a valuable asset.
ROI
Doubled development team's productivity Increased developer efficiency without increasing headcount
The Quest Solution
Once Christensen determined what he was looking for in a development tool, he evaluated several products, including Quest Software's TOAD. TOAD is a powerful, low-overhead tool that makes PL/SQL development faster and easier and simplifies database administration tasks. After the evaluation, Cisco selected TOAD for its powerful functionality and ease-of-use. Features such as a powerful SQL editor, schema browser and SQL modelers help developers and DBAs develop SQL code and simplify database administration tasks. Plus, TOAD offers an Xpert tuning module, which enabled the Cisco team the ability to tune their code in development and get new code in to production faster. In addition, Cisco's DBA team used TOAD's DBA module to analyze data, compare and synchronize and manage space. "Although we had used a variety of products, we really wanted to standardize on one development tool so everyone spoke the same language," said Christensen. "TOAD improves productivity for both our developers and DBAs. Thanks to automated tools like TOAD, developers and DBAs can operate more efficiently and independent of one another to quickly analyze problems and tune the databases."
Benefits
Accelerated performance of diverse group of developers with various skill levels and geographic locations Developers can now tune their own code before it goes to production
Environment
2,000 servers and 1,000 databases in multiple locations, mainly Oracle-based systems Large IT organization with over 600 developers supporting more than 35,000 employees worldwide
