Content Inside: FOOTBALL 1. Football was introduced to England by Roman soldiers 2. where it had been a rough and violent game. It was 3. used as a military training to improve fitness. The ball 4. was made from leather and stuffed with sponges and fur. 5. In the Middle Ages men played football with a pig’s 6. bladder full of dried peas. There were no football rules 7. until about 1800. Games were often played between rival 8. villages with as many as 100 players in each team. 9. The pitch could be a large area, including streets, 10. squares and fields. It was a violent and disorganised 11. game and became so dangerous that it was forbidden in 12. England and in Scotland in the fourteenth century. 13. In the sixteenth century Queen Elizabeth I of England 14. banned this very popular game. The soldiers in her army 15. had played football instead of practising archery. 16. But the game survived, although the workers of the 17. Industrial Revolution were surely too tired and had too 18. little time to take active part in a game like football. 19. Women sometimes played football, too. In Scotland once 20. a year married women played against unmarried women. 21. The boys’ schools kept the game alive, although every 22. school had different rules. In the eighteen-fifties 23. players from public schools took the lead in writing down 24. football rules. But every school had different ideas of 25. the size and shape of the ball. So there were two games: 26. rugby and soccer. 27. In the United States, ‘football’ refers to American 28. football, which is a very fast and tough game. 29. Australian football is a mixture of soccer and rugby. 30. The field is nearly twice as big as a soccer field. 31. Every year thousands of fans come to Wembley in London 32. for the Cup Final. Every four years millions of exciting 33. fans all over the world are glued to their TV-sets for 34. the World Cup competition.
