Content Inside: AP Biology Syllabus Course Overview This AP Biology course conforms to the standards instituted by the College Board for all AP courses and covers all the topics in the AP Biology Course Description. The emphasis of the content of the course is as follows: I. Molecules and Cells, 25% a. Chemistry of Life b. Cells c. Cellular Energetics II. Heredity and Evolution, 25% a. Heredity b. Molecular Genetics c. Evolutionary Biology III. Organisms and Populations, 50% a. Diversity of Organisms b. Structure and Function of Plants and Animals c. Ecology The major themes with in these three broad categories that recur and are emphasized throughout the course include: 1. Science as a Process 2. Evolution 3. Energy Transfer 4. Continuity and Change 5. Relationship of Structure to Function 6. Regulation 7. Interdependence in Nature 8. Science, Technology, and Society The course is designed to meet four days each week for approximately 36 weeks. Regular class periods are 45 minutes long 3 days a week with an accompanying 90 minute class period 1 day a week. A minimum of 25% of instructional time is devoted to lab work. In addition to covering topics from the textbook, this course intends to introduce current biological discoveries and issues, so that students may develop the ability to apply the knowledge in biology to issues in society and their everyday lives. General Course Objectives Each student shall: • Exhibit mastery of the major principles of biology • Apply biological knowledge and critical thinking to current environmental and social concerns found in scientific journals and newspapers • Practice finding and using patterns in collected data to solve scientific problems • Connect biological principles to the underlying theme of evolution • Develop an overall understanding of science as a process
