Content Inside: THE SLEEPING BEAUTY A Study Guide for Teachers and Students Artwork for Study Guide by Emily Grosland Based on the Fairy Tale by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Adapted for the stage by Gayle Cornelison SYNOPSIS To celebrate the birth of their daughter, the King and Queen invite all of the kingdom’s noblest dignitaries to the palace including the fairies who are their dearest friends. But, the evil fairy, Rothmort, furious at not receiving an invitation, places a curse on the newborn princess! On her eighteenth birthday, the princess will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and sleep forever. However, the good fairy, Miranda, alters the spell so that the princess may be awakened by the kiss of a man whose heart is courageous and truthful. But, still fearful for his daughter’s safety, the King bans all spinning wheels from the kingdom. Eighteen years pass, and the princess, known as Beauty, is now a beautiful young lady with a kind heart. On the evening of her birthday, the King and Queen are hopeful that Rothmort has forgotten her evil prophecy. The King and Queen must leave Beauty to attend their guests, leaving her under Miranda’s protective eye. However, using her dark magic, Rothmort conjures a spinning wheel, and the curious Beauty is drawn to the device, having never seen one in her life. Rothmort has bewitched the spinning wheel and Beauty soon pricks her finger on the spindle causing her to enter her fateful sleep! Miranda discovers the princess and places her in a bed chamber to await the kiss of a brave prince. She then casts a deep sleep on the entire kingdom, so that all may await a brighter day. After many years pass, the valiant Prince Edmond arrives at the kingdom, seeking a test of his courage and strength, as well as a wonderful maid to marry. After a fight with Rothmort in Beauty’s chamber, good prevails as Prince Edmond defeats Rothmort. Prince Edmond kisses Beauty, and she awakes as do the King and Queen, and the entire kingdom. Truth and courage have won the day and our story ends as it began, with a joyous celebration!
