Content Inside: [ first exposure ] Pentax K20D Worthy of a Pro’s Consideration By John Rettie I’ll bet many (older) readers like me started their photo- graphic careers using Pentax cameras and lenses. Even if you did not, I’m sure most old-timers would agree that back in the late 1960s and early 1970s Pentax was among the leaders in the pro photography world, at least among those who used 35mm cameras. Once Nikon and then Canon blazed a path into the minds and wal ets of pro and advanced amateur photographers in the 1980s and 1990s, it seems Pentax, as much as any camera manufacturer, was all but forgotten. Since digital supplanted film during the past few years it’s pret y much been a two-horse race between Canon and Nikon in the DSLR world. However, when you look at the latest DSLR of erings from the likes of Olympus, Pentax, Sony and Samsung, it’s beginning to look like Canon and Nikon’s duopoly may well be coming to an end. This is not a bad thing for consumers, as competition will improve the breed more than anything. The Pentax K20D was first announced back in February 2008. It immediately captured the at ention of buyers with a feature set and specs that elevated it from being an also-ran to a front-runner. I had the opportunity to experience and use the K20D along with an assortment of Pentax lenses for several weeks. And I have been impressed as it’s a system I found to be perfectly acceptable for pro use. To set the record straight, the K20D is not a competitor to the Canon EOS 1-series or Nikon’s D3 flagship model. Instead, it is aimed directly at the second tier of cameras in- cluding the Canon EOS 40D (and now the upcoming 50D) and the Nikon D300. The first specification that catches one’s eye is the 14.6- megapixel CMOS sensor, which was the highest in this APS-C segment for a few months until Canon announced the 15-megapixel 50D in September! As we all know, the number of pixels in a sensor is no longer the be al and end al of DSLRs. Many photographers have found that cameras with 10- or 12-megapixel sensors are perfectly adequate and that sometimes more pixels can actually lead to a deterioration in image quality, especially at Top: An optional battery pack adds height and weight to the K20D. The camera also includes a PC connection for K20D’s sensor, which is excellent up to ISO 1600 when noise external flash. does begin to rear its ugly head.
