Content Inside: Perseid Meteor Shower – 2009 What is the Perseid Meteor Shower? It is one of nature’s most amazing shows. The Perseid shower is one of the most reliable meteor showers and is best seen in the Northern Hemisphere. This performance peaks in the early morning hours of August 12, 2009. What is a meteor? You’ll hear a few similar terms: meteor; meteoroid; and meteorite. The word meteor refers to the bright streak of light created by a meteoroid as it burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere. Popular names for a meteor are “shooting star” or “falling star.” A meteoroid is a small particle of dust or rock that burns up in the atmosphere. A meteorite is a piece of rock that manages to survive the trip through the atmosphere and land on the surface of the Earth. Where should I look to see them? The meteors will be visible all over the sky! However, if you watch carefully you will notice that the meteors appear to be coming out of the northeast. In fact, the meteors will appear to be coming out of the constellation of Perseus, which is the reason it is referred to as the Perseid Meteor Shower. Image provided by Starry Night Pro.
