Content Inside: T H E N E W A G E MOVE ME N T I S N OT H IN G N E W PROLOGUE The roots of the New Age Movement (or self-help phenomenon) can be traced to the Period of Enlightenment or Age of Reason. Baron von Holbach (1723-89) aptly expressed the core direction of the age when he said, "So that he may learn to base his morals on his own nature, on his own wants, on the real advantage of society ... in short, that he may become a virtuous and rational being, who cannot fail to become happy."1 However, long before the eighteenth century, a sly and cunning serpent, the Deceiver, tricked the first human beings into thinking they could reason amongst themselves and become like the Almighty God. They did not become virtuous, nor did they become happy. They separated themselves from the very Source of righteousness and peace. Without much effort, one can see the frustration of the Western world as its inhabitants seek to satisfy an unspoken longing or emptiness that lives in the unseen depths of every soul that does not know God. God answered this longing twice in history, first with his chosen people Israel, and then with his son, Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, the nature of man is consistently seeking to satisfy its needs apart from God's plan. "The Age of Reason was highlighted by the denial of any supernatural religion. Respect for science and human reason replaced the Christian faith."2 The Enlightenment ushered in an age that has never turned back, an age when man does not base his actions on faith in God and his authority, but on his own authority and understanding of the world around him. This post-modern, new age worldview has come to permeate the very fabric of humanity, including the Evangelical Church. FROM FAITH TO REASON GOD'S AUTHORITY REPLACED 1 Bruce L.
