Content Inside: Ottawa Sun - July 6, 2002 The Golf Swing Recipe No matter how many years I spend teaching golf it still astounds me how many of you think that there is an easy way to get better. Some of you try to buy a game with the newest and most hyped high tech equipment. Others will buy a book like "Golf For Dummies" (talk about a perfect title). Even those of you who practice and take lessons tend to think that you'll improve faster than you will. Think about it. If it was easy to get good at golf then a ton of people would be good. And it just takes a quick scan at the local range or on the first tee any Saturday morning to see that most golfers are a long, long way from mastering the swing. To improve at golf you need to be fitted for equipment, you must take lessons, you must practice, but above all you need to be persistent and patient. There is no fast lane to greatness. There is no secret. Even those of you who practice and take lessons still tend to think that there is some kind of light switch. You're all looking for the magic thought or move. That one key thought during your swing that will trigger a great golf shot. Pupils ask me questions all the time like. "What starts the downswing?" "Do I think about my hips?" Do I think about my arms?" After they hit a shot I hear "Is that it? Have I got it?" The truth is that there is no magic thought that you can focus on to help you master the swing nor will you ever "get it" or "have it". The golf swing cannot be mastered. You will always hit poor shots. Even Tiger Woods hits poor shots and plays bad rounds. The golf swing is a blending of many moving parts in several different directions at high speed. So you can forget about "getting it". You may bump into it or borrow it occasionally but you can forget about discovering the secret because there isn't one. Think about the golf swing like it's a recipe. You can't think about just one ingredient and no one ingredient is any more important than the others. If you overuse one ingredient you'll destroy the recipe. If you think eggs are the key to a good cake and you throw in too many eggs your cake will taste awful. In your golf swing, if you think about just one part, you'll likely overuse or overemphasize that part and hit lousy shots. That doesn't mean you can't key on a specific point. Just keep in mind that each part works with all the others and not on it's own. The golf swing is like a series of dominoes. It's a chain reaction of positions. Your hips may trigger a motion but your arms also have a job, as do your legs and your shoulders and your wrists and your hands....To become a better player you need to learn about the swing and then practice blending all the elements together. Like with most things it's everything in moderation. And when it comes to golf it's practice, persistence, and patience.
