Content Inside: SEO Tips for 2008 (or any year) Google has thrown many uphevals into the webmaster mix during 2007 and with the crack-down on paid links and the general environment of tumbling page rank things are becoming more and more uncertain in the SEO world. Taking all this into account, I've been trawling through the host of SEO tips emerging during the start of 2008 to come-up with my personal 'top 3' strategies, which I present here. Optimize your 404 Page This is a personal favourite and a tip that I keep on coming back to again and again. The "Error 404: Page Not Found" error is the bane of any Webmaster. If you're adding content and building your site on a constant basis then there will be pages that you have missed, or have dropped without meaning to. As a result you will have missing pages and you will see the '404 Not Found' error. But you can make the best of a bad job by actually making this page do useful things. Think of it this way, getting a visitor to any page of your site is fantastic! But once you've got that visitor you need to do something useful with them. So, don't let your 404 error page be a blank page doing nothing for you, add some content and make it useful: If you have a small site add your site's title to the page. Add some real keyword-rich content to the page. Remember that this is an 'inactive' page. What you should use it for is to tell your users what the site is about... Something along the lines of: Thank you for visiting the Celtnet site. We're sorry but you seem to have found a missing page. Rest assured, you are on the web's premier resource for blue widgets [or whatever]... Continue for tow or three paragraphs, highlighting your site and putting-in links to useful resources that you have. End it something with 'Please click here to visit your site map, or use the navigation system on the left.' Add your site's header and standard sidebars, including navigation system to this page. Make the error page look as if it's part of your site. Use your standard 'look and feel', headers, sidebars, footers and use your usual cascading style sheets and layout. Use tools like Google Alerts Google Alerts is a vastly under-used tool... Especially as this service provided by the biggest search engine can be your spy within the industry. In case you haven't come across this service before, it's an email alert that updates you on the latest Google results, based on your choice of query or topic. For those serious about their SEO it's an incredible and powerful tool that allows you to: monitor developing news stories keep current on a competitor or industry get the latest or a celebrity or event (great for blogs and alerts) keep tabs on sports teams and sporting events (again great for blogs) monitor breaking web and SEO stories (great for 'alerts' to your email subscribers) Basically, it works like this: You set-up an account in Google and each time Google finds a reference to the query or topic(s) that you set up you're sent an email with the details. You can also use it to find out whenever your site or product is mentioned. You can use it to monitor when a topic is 'hot' to make use of the information for press releases and generating 'buzz'. Get (Even) More Serious about Linking If you are ever going to get your website to perform, then this is the most important thing you can do. PERIOD!
