All three must be on any short list of the most influential beings that have ever walked the planet, and yet in their own lifetimes, none recorded their own teachings. Thus, our approach to these three figures comes through the writings of their earliest and most significant disciples, all of whom wrote in languages other than English, and this means that our access to these teachers is always filtered through multiple layers. In light of this predicament, our task will be not only to sift through these layers to find the "real" teachings, but to explore these layers for what they can offer us here and now. In this way, our methodology in this course diverges from the historical and emerges as philosophical. The "love of wisdom" is both our orientation and our goal, and we pursue the elusive "facts" of history only in the service of the wisdom they can provide us. The role that historical inquiry can play in this process will be an essential theme of this course. Beyond the question of the "real," our readings will take us deeply into the issues of virtue, reason, love, suffering, faith, death, and God. Not one fundamental component of human existence will remain untouched by these figures, and the only constraints on our explorations are time and our imaginations. These are texts through which one can find oneself, discovering new paths or revisiting familiar ones with new eyes. Our journey this semester will be a function of who we are as individuals, and what we bring to one
