Content Inside: Sigmund Freud Today Our Freud and their Freud: differences in understanding the heart of the psychoanalytic project Abstracts of Papers (* indicates plenary talk) Friday 8th December Jean Michel Quinodoz Translating Freud and its side-effects* How can we transmit Freud's thinking today? We are not only confronted with the immensity of Freud's writings, but also with the growing number of post Freudian contributions. How is it possible nowadays for a student to assimilate such a rich legacy? There are many ways to read and to teach Freud. With a group of candidates of the Swiss Society I chose to read chronologically Freud's main texts within three years. Each work is examined from different perspectives: Freud's biography, successive development of his psychoanalytical concepts and post Freudian contributions. As the participants read Freud in his/her preferred language, interesting conclusions can be drawn in comparing the impact of various translations on the psychoanalytic cultures of today. Against the Obsolescence of Psychoanalysis The author traces the development of Freud's thought on the way to the establishment of psychoanalysis as a science of the unconscious. His own self-analysis played a major role in this development. From the outset, the path he chose confronted psychoanalysis and its claims to scientific respectability with major difficulties. Its specific form of self-recognition and reflection ran counter to the methodologies employed in other sciences. It supplied a scientific view of the human individual and helped them to develop a personal identity. The research on Freud has extended and also corrected his self-analytic biography; Freud's traumatic childhood shows up various aspects in a different light. The author describes the difficulties caused by idealizing tendencies in biographical work on Freud. These tendencies also play a significant role in the re-encounter with Freud and psychoanalysis in post-war Germany. Here the idealisation of Freud and his work was partly caused by a subconscious feeling of guilt creating specific trans-generational identification problems. In the closing section of the article, the author discusses the present relevance of Freud and his version of psychoanalysis with reference to three issues: psychoanalysis and the neurosciences; unconscious phantasms with a bearing on social reality and its ideologies, notably (at present) in fundamentalist terrorism; changing processes of identity formation in late modernism and psychoanalytic treatment. Shmuel Erlich Der Mann Moses and the Man Freud: Psychoanalytic Identity and Anti- Semitism In this paper I offer a reading of Freud's last major work, "Moses and Monotheism," that focuses on several intertwined dilemmas which, I suggest, have preoccupied him at that junction of his life. Foremost is the dilemma of leadership and generational transmission, but closely related are issues of identity and historical survival, the struggle between the instincts and Geistigkeit (mind and spirituality), and the meaning of "living on the boundary." These issues have serious and current applicability to anti- Semitism, as well as to the formation and maintaining of a psychoanalytic identity and posture.
