"When Freud was four, his family moved to Vienna, Austria, where Freud spent most of his life until 1983, when he was forced to flee to England because of the Nazi i nvasion"(WU,2003 par.2). At the age of 17 Freud began to study medicine at the University of Vienna. Freud graduated in 1882, and got a job at the Vienna General Hospital, specializing in neurology. F reud then studied in Paris where he became interested in the treatment of an emotional disorder know n as hysteria when he studied under the famous French neurologist, Jean-Martin Charcot. It was there that Freud changed from neurology to psychopathology, the branch of psychology that deals with the abnormal workings of the mind (Freud, 1856-1939, par.1). Freud then went back to Vienna and married Martha Bernys, and they had six children together. In Vienna, Freud "published a paper with Breuer, which expanded in 1895 to Studien Uber Hysterie (Studies in Heysteia), marking the beginnings of psy choanalysis. Recalling significant events from his own childhood (triggered by the death of his fath er in 1896) and from those of his patients, he became convinced, despite his own puritan sensibiliti es, of the certainty of infantile sexuality. The name he gave to his concept of the 'Oedipus Complex ', the name he gave to the erotic feelings of a son for his mother, and its associated sense of comp etition with the father" (Freud, 1856-1939, par. 3). Freud analyzed himself to decode his dreams for the meaning or purpose of the dreams. "In 1902 he was appointed to a chair of neuropathology in Vie nna, despite widespread academic anti-Semitism, and began to gather disciples" (Freud, 1856-1939, pa r.3). Freud wrote "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, published in 1905; this made Freud famou s. But his theories, especially the part about infantile sexuality, were severely criticized by the intellectuals in 20th century Vienna" (Wu, 2003, par.5). In 1902, Freud gained the position of assoc iate professor at the University of Vienna. "In 1908 Freud transformed a Wednesday-night club of Vie nnese physicians into Vienna Psychoanalytic Society where a group attended Freud's weekly seminars" (Freud, 1856-1939, par.4). Freud wrote several books inspired by the death of his daughter Sophie. " Even while Freud became a household word, while his ideas were absorbed by an eager populace, Freud was undergoing painful surgery for cancer in late 1923. Though he did not die, the rest of his life was marked by pain and discomfort" (Stevenson, 1996 par.10). The rest of Freud's life, He published more controversial works, including some papers on female sexuality. "In 1935, just before Freud's e ightieth birthday, Freud was appointed Honorary Member of the prestigious British Royal Society of M edicine" (Wu, 2003, par.5). Freud was dealing with cancer in the jaw and cheeks. In London on Septem ber 23, 1939, Freud died by a lethal dose of morphine. "Freud's most important influence was to insp ire modern psychiatry by his examination of mental illness" (Freud, 1856-1939, par.7). "Today, the c ontroversy over Freud's theories remains. Those theories, however, have forever changed the Western views of psychopathology, day-to-day life, and the world" (Wu, 2003, par.6).
