Content Inside: EDUCATION 202X: INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL AND COMPARATIVE EDUCATION Teaching Team Class Schedule Professors Thursdays, 3-6 pm Martin Carnoy (tel: 5-1254; e-mail: carnoy@leland) Office hours and Diana Rhoten (in conjunction with 206a) Carnoy: Mon. 1-3 (tel: 5-1950; e-mail: drhoten@leland) Introduction to International and Comparative Education surveys the substance and methods of international and comparative education. The course attempts to present this very diverse field in a coherent framework. Since formal education has typically been an activity financed and usually managed by the public sector, all analyses of national educational systems, educational reforms, and comparisons between systems have implicit in them a theory of politics, or the state, as it is usually referred to. Theories of the state will the framework we use to understand theories of education. The comparative method will be the framework we use to understand comparative analysis. Usually, neither these theories nor the comparative method used is explained by authors doing international and comparative education, so part of our task in this course will be to understand which theory and which comparative method underlie each analysis. A second and important purpose of the course is to get the MA students in ICE and IEAPA to begin developing their monograph--the literature review is at once a way to to a critical analysis of a subject and to develop a topic for the monograph. It is therefore key that MA students work closely on their lit review with their advisor. We require one textbook and a set of readings bound in a class reader. 1. Carnoy, Martin (1984). The State and Political Theory. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press.[Available for sale at the first class.] 2. Bound reader sold in class. Assignments 1. Reflections on the State and education (3 pages, double-space). Write a brief analysis, based on the first four weeks of readings and class discussions, of the influence of political theory in writings on comparative education.How do authors come to the conclusion that educational systems differ? When is the role that education plays in one society or another different? Is there ever a "real" difference in education's function among societies?
